The Photonics and Fiber Optics Lab is actively involved in outreach activities aimed at raising awareness about this exciting field of science among our local community, particularly among middle school and high school students and teachers.
We are fortunate that the demonstration of optics and photonics concepts is so visually reach, eye-pleasing and immediately intuitive at any school age, even to students without substantial education in Math and Science. This, we believe, makes Optics and Photonics the ideal topic to introduce to middle and high-school students, as a vehicle to spark their interest in Science in general, and in Optics and Photonics in particular. To this end, over the course of the past two years, the lab has hosted several demonstrations in support of such university-wide activities as Kamp Kettering, DiscoverU, 21st Century Woman, and Discover Kettering open house. Demonstrations in optical fibers, illumination, lasers, holography and imaging have been included. The pictures on this page are a cross section of these activities.
A picture is worth a thousand words; a hologram, even more!
Have you ever tried to catch a rainbow?
Well, here it is!
