LED the way: Senior Kevin Markell has created an LED parking lot light for his thesis. This new type of light, if designed correctly, will increase the security in parking lots and reduce energy consumption by over 50%. One of his LED lights is mounted to an existing light pole on the south side of the Mott building. He needs your help filling out a survey regarding the effectiveness of the new light as opposed to the old light. Read more about how to answer his survey.

3 more flu clinics:
Three more flu clinics are scheduled for Nov. 10, 12 & 17. Both the nasal and shot forms of the vaccine are now available and the priority groups have been expanded. Get the details.

Local recognition
: Kettering’s contributions in protecting the environment were recognized by the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce during its Business Awards banquet Nov. 4. Kettering was a finalist for the “Outstanding Green Business of the Year Award,” and while the honor actually went to Rowe Professional Services Co., the University’s efforts placed it on a select list of the county’s top seven businesses striving to be green.

Flagged:
In an effort to highlight Kettering's diverse population, Sumit Kamboj & Bi Zan Valery Lorou pursued an initiative to display flags from the countries representative of Kettering's student body. Sharing their cultures with the Kettering community are students from 29 countries. The flag display reinforces the fusion of diversity and unites Kettering's student body as one family. Biogas update:
Swedish Biogas International CEO Thomas Guise, whose office is housed in the Mott Center, met with local residents to discuss details of the biogas project in Flint. See video.

Flint news: A new FedEx facility has opened at Bishop Airport and efforts to reclaim “Chevy in the Hole” began with a dump truck full of leaves this week.

Eminent Person:
What does Dr. Bahram Roughani, department chair for Physics at Kettering University, have in common with Harry Belafonte, Lech Walesa, Spike Lee, Cesar Chavez and Margaret Meade? He will join the ranks of featured speakers for the Ballenger Eminent Persons Lecture Series at Mott Community College (MCC), funded by the Foundation for Mott Community College. Read more.

Global Issues:
The 8th Annual Global Issues Film Festival sponsored by Mott Community College, Kettering University & UM-Flint is Nov. 14 and 15, in the MCC Regional Technology Center Auditorium. All films are shown free of charge. This year the festival features Flint Filmmaker Michael Ramsdell. The second half of the festival will run Jan. 27-30, 2010 on the campus of Kettering University. Great Job:
Tomas Hajek (IT) wrote a proposal to Sun Microsystems that resulted in Kettering receiving about $35,000 in Sun Server hardware. The equipment will be used to test updates to and provide redundancy for our Sun Communications Suite and as an auxiliary campus-access UNIX virtual machine for faculty & students to run high resource jobs (Java, Fortran, etc). Tomas and Robert Morneau (IT) are working on the integration with our existing systems. This is part of IT's ongoing commitment to support the technological resources of the University.

Worried about H1N1 : The Genesee County Health Department provided the most up-to-date information on H1N1 in Genesee County. The information addresses questions on the vaccine supply and community efforts to fight the flu locally. See their talking points.
